LSI Graduate Assistant Job Description

The Office of Leadership and Student Involvement (LSI) at the University of Southern Mississippi invites eligible candidates to apply for a Graduate Assistantship within the LSI office. The LSI Graduate Assistant (GA) selected for this role will provide support to all LSI programs including the Southern Miss Activities Council (SMAC), Golden Eagle Welcome Week, campus traditions, and Parent and Family Programs. This position will be offered as a one year contract with the option to extend for an additional year. A compensation package will be offered to the successful candidate in line with University GA policies.

Assistantship Overview: 

Primarily works with two functional areas within the Office of Leadership and Student Involvement (LSI): (1) the Southern Miss Activities Council (SMAC), where the GA will assist in the production of high-quality campus programming for USM students; and (2) Golden Eagle Welcome Week (GEWW), where the GA will assist with the planning and implementation of GEWW. Additionally, this position assists the Office of Leadership and Student Involvement (LSI) in its mission to promote involvement and leadership development.

  • Understand that this position is considered professional staff of the Office of Leadership and Student Involvement and should act as such. No inappropriate or disrespectful behavior will be tolerated at any time.
  • Maintain consistent, reliable, and timely communication with the LSI professional staff, student workers, SMAC Executive Board, SMAC general members, GEWW Executive Board, and GEWW Crew Leaders.
  • Keep the advisor(s) aware of any work or event absences as you become aware of them.
  • Maintain confidentiality of GEWW, SMAC, and LSI related information.
  • Respect office resources (office space, computers, internet, long distance codes, phones, etc.). These resources are to be used for work related purposes only.
  • Business casual attire required unless otherwise stated.

General Duties

  • Assist in creating, managing, and distributing marketing content for all events, membership, and SMAC related content.
  • Attend weekly SMAC Executive Board meetings, biweekly SMAC Member meetings, and other meetings related to SMAC or LSI as needed.
  • Take primary responsibility for all SMAC event satisfaction assessments, and SMAC member assessments.
  • Assist with the coordination, preparation, supervision, and cleanup for SMAC events.
  • Aid in the advising of the Golden Eagle Welcome Week (GEWW) Exec team.
  • Assist with the selection process and onboarding of GEWW Crew members, including facilitating classes during UNV 312, the course developed to train GEWW Crew leaders.
  • Support the preparation and execution of Golden Eagle Welcome Week for incoming freshmen and transfer students.
  • Return all phone calls and email messages from all program affiliated persons, USM professional staff, and outside sponsors and vendors within 24 hours. 
  • Have a clear understanding of the Leadership and Student Involvement offerings, programs, and website and serve as a resource for all students and visitors in the office.
  • Work 20 hours per week, understanding that scheduling will be based on the needs of the office and will require shifts at the LSI front desk throughout the year.
  • Assist the Office of Leadership and Student Involvement on special projects such as, but not limited to, Move in Day, leadership workshops, SOAR Awards, Student Leadership Summit, etc. This also includes serving as a representative of the LSI at events including Black and Gold Day, Transfer Day, and New Student Orientations.
