Thank you for for working with your international student advisee to consider a recommendation for CPT.

In order to make a recommendation for Curricular Practical Training, we ask that advisors review the written job offer and discuss with advisee about its connection(s) to the departmental curriculum. If you have any questions about CPT or the CPT recommendation process, please contact INTL@usm.edu or the Director of International Student and Scholar Services.

CPT DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDATION FORM

Thank you for supporting USM international students.  In order for International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) to authorize Curricular Practical Training (CPT),  the academic advisor is asked to attest to the connection between the academic curriculum and the job opportunity proposed by the student.

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a benefit of F-1 status, which allows eligible degree-seeking students to obtain temporary employment directly related to the student’s academic curriculum. [8CFR214.2(f)(10)(i)]  These employment opportunities can include full-time and off-campus options. Prior to beginning an internship or employment, students must receive permission from International Student and Scholar Services and an updated I-20 authorizing the internship/employment with details of the approval.

As a recommender for CPT, we ask that the academic adviser review the student's employment offer, discuss its connection to the curriculum, and advise the student to register for the appropriate course.  Students are required to maintain full time course enrollment (including in person classes) during CPT authorization period.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

To meet the requirements for Curricular Practical Training, the student's internship/employment must be:

  • Related to the student’s field of study
  • Appropriate to student’s degree level
  • Integral to student’s degree program
  • Required by the degree program, carry course credit or be essential for gathering research for the student’s thesis/dissertation

Additionally, the student must have:

  • Maintained F-1 status for one academic year (two semesters)
  • Valid passport and I-20
  • A job offer letter

Questions about CPT can be directed to International Student and Scholar Services at INTL@usm.edu or the Director of International Student and Scholar Services.
